Enhanced Recovery

Enhanced Recovery is a holistic approach to healthcare.  It is a new proven way of improving the experience and wellbeing of people who need major surgery.  It helps you to recover sooner, reduces the risk of infection and ensures your stay is as short as possible.  It also provides improved pain control so that your life can return to normal as quickly as possible.

An essential part of enhanced recovery is that you take an active role in your own care.  You can choose what is best for your throughout the course of your treatment with help and advice from your GP, consultant and Lister Surgicentre team.

Enhanced recovery aims to ensure:

  • You are in the best possible condition for surgery – your GP or consultant will identify and treat any conditions you have which may affect the operation.  At this stage, your GP or consultant will ensure you understand all of the treatment options, so that you can make an informed decision about whether to proceed with surgery.
  • You are fully prepared for your surgery
  • You may have to attend a pre-op therapy clinic (a one-off appointment where you will meet with your care team to discuss your needs) to help you prepare for your surgery and rehabilitation.
  • You have the best possible management during and after the operation – your overall experience is improved by the use of practices, such as individual appropriate anaesthetics and minimally invasive surgical techniques.
  • You experience the best post operative rehabilitation – this means improved access to rehabilitation services, enabling early recovery and prompt discharge from the Lister Surgicentre, as well as return to normal life sooner.
