Ophthalmology

How should I refer a patient to the Lister Surgicentre for Ophthalmology?

Clinicenta has taken responsibility for all adult ophthalmology services at our new Lister Surgicentre in Stevenage under contract to NHS Hertfordshire.  We carry out all adult services previously provided by East and North Hertforshire Trust’s (The Trust) ophthalmology department. The services remain at their existing location, except for daycase surgery which will now take place in the Lister Surgicentre Ophthalmology Unit.

 The Clinicenta ophthalmology service offers:

  • Day case ophthalmology surgery at the Lister Surgicentre, with some inpatient stays where clinically appropriate;
  • Surgical and medical ophthalmology outpatient services at the Lister Surgicentre, QEII Hospital and Hertfordshire Community Hospital;
  • Urgent eye care clinics on the Lister Surgicentre site only.

Diabetic Retinopathy Screening

Clinicenta also provides retinal screening for patients over 12 years old who are listed on the GP Diabetic register  at the Lister Surgicentre itself, Queen Elizabeth II Hospital,  Hertford County Hospital, Herts and Essex Hospital, Royston Community Hospital, Cheshunt Community Hospital, Baldock and Portmill (Hitchin);

 Referrals

 The Clinicenta ophthalmology service will accept all new referrals in the same way as the previous service – written, electronically or by secure fax:
  • All referrals for ophthalmic medical, surgical or urgent consultation should be made: Directly by GPs and optometrists via letter addressed to Lister Surgicentre, Lister Hospital, Coreys Mill Lane, Stevenage, Hertfordshire, SG1 4AJ
  • Directly via choose and book for non- pre-approval and low priority procedures
  • Via PCT Clinical Assessment Service for pre-approval and low priority procedures as described below.
  • All Retinal Screening referrals should be made to the Clinicenta East and North Hertfordshire Diabetic Screening Unit, QEII Hospital.
  • All referrals for urgent care clinics made directly to the Lister Surgicentre by GPs or Optometrists within opening hours must be accompanied by a written referral letter.
  • As was the case, eye conditions that require an urgent specialist opinion outside normal working hours should be sent directly to tertiary centres, such as Moorfields. More minor problems can be assessed in the emergency department and an eye clinic appointment may be made for the next available day.
Patients can use Choose and Book for outpatient services with appointments being available for Ophthalmology services at the following sites:

  • Lister Surgicentre
  • QEII Hospital
